Azerbaijan is a country where tolerance and respect for cultural differences is highly valued and different ethnic minorities live together in a peaceful manner. Among them, Talyshi ethnic group constitutes 1 % of Azerbaijani population living along Iranian border, particularly in the district of Lankaran. The origin of the word “Lankaran” is believed to come from the Talysh language (the language that minority group speaks) meaning “Phragmites home”.
As one of the most beautiful regions of Azerbaijan, Lankaran will remain in your memory with its as spectacular view of natural beauties, a large diversity of greengrocery and delicious traditional cuisine.
In this city, you will be able to enjoy a great variety of exotic fruits, particularly feijoa and fresh vegetables. In the entrance of the city, the symbol of samovar grabs the attention of tourists, which is the sign of high-quality tea grown in Lankaran. The gastronomy of Lankaran is known with its fish or chicken “lavangi”, which is the baked fish stuffed with walnuts – unlike anything you have ever tasted.
Khan Palace
Khan's Palace in Lankaran was erected in honor of his wife Tugra khanum in 1913 by the order of Mir Ahmed Khan, the descendant of the Talysh khan. This magnificent building was the first multi-storey building in Lankaran and it was built by various European architects. The buildings materials were brought by ship from Baku. The facade of the building is decorated with mythological figures.
Dairevi gala (Prison)
For the history lovers, “Dairevi gala” is a must-see place in Lankaran. “Dairevi gala” is one of the most ancient buildings in Lankaran. The fortress was built in 18th century by the order of Nadir shah for defense purposes; however, after the invasion of Russian troops, the magnificent building started to be used as a prison. It is supposed that through the secret underground tunnel between the prison and the lighthouse, prisoners were brought here, which ensured the privacy of them and even the one of the most notorious man of history, Iossif Stalin, had been imprisoned for some time after being captured in a train.
Khanega
Kahnega, the religious cult of Lankaran located in Pirsagat river, is another well-preserved landmark dated back to the 12th-14th centuries. It is a complex of mosques and mausoleums and the architectural design of the religious temple is a reason that you will admire most.
