Gobustan National Park

Officially Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is a hill and mountain site occupying the southeast end of the Greater Caucasus mountain ridge. It is located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Baku city center on the west bank of the Caspian Sea.

In 1966, Gobustan was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the ancient carvings, relics, mud volcanoes and gas-stones in the region. In 2007, Gobustan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered to be of "outstanding universal value"" for the quality and density of its rock art engravings depicting images of hunting, fauna, flora and lifestyles in pre-historic times and for the cultural continuity between prehistoric and medieval times that the site reflects.

“Ateshgah the Fire Worshippers Temple”

It was built in 17th and 18th centuries is the most fascinating place in Absheron peninsula. The temple ceased to be a place of worship after 1883 with the installation of petroleum plants at Surakhany. The complex was turned into a museum in 1975. The annual number of visitors to the museum is 15,000.

"Yanardag"

You will learn legends about Burning Mountain - Yanardag, the most famous 'eternal flame' in Azerbaijan; it was lit in the 1950s by a shepherd on the side of the hill. It is one of the few fire mountains that exist today. Yanardag Mountain with natural gas burning for several thousands of years.

10:00 - Start of the Excursion to Gobustan National Park - rock paintings, drawings, inscriptions and pictograms at the mountain Beyokdash - Parking of the primitive man of the Neolithic period, tombstones - A stone slab with an inscription in Latin, left by the Roman army of Domitian (emperor) - A tambourine, which participated in ritual dances and rituals, held in the territory of Gobustan.

13:00 - Lunch time

14:00 - Excursion to Ateshgah Fire Temple - in the past centuries Zoroastrians who were related to ancient fire worshiping religion considered the natural gas vents as a highest level of their ceremonies.  

16:30 - Burning Mountain – “Yanardag” 

Yanar Dag is the most well-known and popular tourist site which is often called the “eternal flame” of Azerbaijan. When you visit the site, you’ll see that it is rather a hill than a mountain. the fire flames continuously from burning natural gas deposits in the hillside from ancient times.
