Heydar Aliyev Center
It is considered as one of the main attractions for tourists and has also become a symbol of modern Azerbaijan and modern Baku. Zaha Hadid, the author of the building’s design, is a worldwide recognized architect and the winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize and Design of the Year award for her design of Heydar Aliyev Center. The overall shape of the building resembles a wave-like ascension from the ground towards the sky followed by gradual descent down to the earth.
Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Baku was opened on March 20, 2009. The museum has a collection of over 800 works by Azerbaijani artists and sculptors, mostly working in the avant-garde style. Responsible for the museum’s design is the well-known artist Altay Sadykhzadeh. The museum has a children’s art room, a library, a video room, a restaurant and an art cafe.
Azerbaijan Carpet museum
Along the waterfront, you will find the Carpet Museum with its building in the shape of a giant rolled-up carpet. The Azerbaijani carpet has experienced a long history. In carpet patterns the people embodied its artistic talents, philosophic outlooks, and spiritual notions about beauty. Information on Azerbaijani carpets can be found in various historical sources written by the ancient Greek historians Herodotus and Xenophon (5th c. B.C.), the Caucasian Albanian historian Moises Kalankatuski (7th c. B.C.), the Chinese traveler Xuan Tes-Ank, the Arabian travelers Al-Movsudi, Al-Mugaddasi, and Al-Istehri. The Carpet museum as being brilliantly photogenic, the museum, designed in the form of a huge folded carpet, also houses ceramics, 14th-century metal work, bronze-age jewelry and a permanent collection of 600 carpets from the Shusha Museum of History.
